Drive System Explained
Chain
Drive
This means of power has it’s own appeal as the visual effect of
the chains has its merits. Winding is achieved by manually drawing
down the chains and raising the weights to the desired height.
Cable Drive
This is a more sophisticated means of winding whereby cables are
passed over pulleys at the top of the weights from a static
top-mounting to a winding drum behind the dial which is turned by
key through keyholes in the lower half of the dial.
The centre weight which drives the time train will drop
approximately 100mm (4”) over 24hrs, so with this in mind one can
achieve some idea from the gap beneath the weight how many day’s
running remain before re-winding is required
While most clocks will have a running duration of seven days, some
models will have only six days depending on the style of the case
